Nature Detectives
Nature Detectives
Curiosity is the Curriculum
with Veritsa Vasiljevic Patocchi
Nature Detectives is a child-led permaculture learning experience in which curiosity, observation, creativity, and play serve as pathways to ecological understanding.
Inspired by democratic education and hands-on learning, this workshop invites children to explore nature directly through movement, storytelling, sensory activities, gardening, observation, creative expression, and collaborative discovery.
Rather than following rigid instruction, participants are encouraged to ask questions, investigate natural systems, and learn through relationships with the living world around them.
Children become “Nature Detectives,” observing patterns, insects, plants, soil, water, weather, and ecological connections while engaging in practical and creative activities rooted in permaculture principles.
Activities may include:
Nature observation and sensory exploration
Seed planting and simple gardening practices
Soil, compost, and biodiversity discovery
Creative mapping and collaborative design projects
Natural art and storytelling
Group games inspired by ecological systems
Collective reflection and sharing circles
The workshop creates a space where children are trusted as active participants in learning, while nurturing cooperation, care for the Earth, imagination, and connection with community.
Designed to adapt to different ages, environments, and group dynamics, Nature Detectives can take place in gardens, forests, farms, festivals, schools, retreat centres, and community spaces.

Children, families, intergenerational gatherings, alternative education spaces, festivals, permaculture courses, and community events.
